Chicago police are investigating an alarming incident that occurred early Saturday morning when shots were fired at the security detail stationed outside the residence of former Mayor Lori Lightfoot in Logan Square.

Incident Details

The incident, which took place around 3:15 a.m. near the intersection of Wrightwood and Kimball, involved an unmarked police squad being targeted by gunfire. Fortunately, no officers sustained injuries, and the police did not retaliate with gunfire. However, a bullet struck the windshield of the vehicle, and a fragment was recovered inside the car’s floor.

Response from Lori Lightfoot

A spokesperson for Lori Lightfoot released a statement on behalf of the former mayor, acknowledging the incident and expressing gratitude for the security detail’s dedication and bravery. Despite being shaken by the news, Lightfoot and her family remained unharmed.

Previous Security Concerns

This isn’t the first time Lightfoot’s security detail has faced threats. In 2022, the former mayor disclosed to TLNA7 that she bolstered her security measures after an alleged stalker was apprehended near her home with a loaded firearm. Additionally, in the same year, her security detail engaged in a shootout with a robbery suspect in the vicinity of the 1800 block of North Monticello.

Lori Lightfoot’s Tenure as Mayor

Lori Lightfoot served as the mayor of Chicago from 2019 to 2023, during which she faced numerous challenges related to crime and violence in the city.

Ongoing Investigation

As of now, no suspects have been apprehended in connection with the recent shooting incident, and the Chicago Police Department is actively investigating the matter.

Ensuring Safety Amidst Challenges

Incidents like the shooting outside Lori Lightfoot’s home underscore the importance of robust security measures, particularly for public figures and officials. While authorities work to apprehend those responsible, it’s crucial to acknowledge the dedication and sacrifice of law enforcement personnel who put themselves at risk to ensure the safety of others.
