SANTA PAULA, Calif. – Heavy rain triggers a massive mudslide, closing State Route 150 in Ventura County for months, prompting detours and community concerns.

Road Closure and Duration

Recent rainstorms unleashed havoc in Ventura County, leading to a significant mudslide that has obstructed a segment of State Route 150 near Santa Paula. Caltrans anticipates the closure to persist for several months, as crews grapple with extensive cleanup and repair efforts.

Slide Details and Impact

The mudslide, triggered by the relentless February storms, covers more than 150 feet of the road with mud and debris, rendering it impassable. With an estimated 3,200 daily vehicles traversing this route, the closure disrupts commuter routines and logistical operations in the region.

Detour Routes

With the affected stretch of road blocked, motorists are directed to lengthy detours spanning approximately 40 miles. These alternative routes guide drivers through Ventura and Ojai using State Route 126, U.S. Highway 101, and State Route 33, offering temporary pathways amid the road closure.

Additional Challenges

Aside from the mammoth mudslide, another section of State Route 150, approximately two miles north of the slide, faces lane closures due to erosion from the same storms in February. Caltrans aims to reopen one lane of this segment by the end of May, alleviating some of the traffic congestion and travel disruptions.
