Passaic, N.J. – A devastating fire engulfed a Passaic apartment complex on Sunday morning, claiming the lives of a New Jersey couple, as reported by TLNA5 NY’s Kendall Green. Mayor Hectora Lora confirmed the tragic incident, stating that first responders received a distress call around 9 o’clock in the morning, alerting them to a fire on Spruce Street in Passaic. Regrettably, the fire resulted in the loss of two senior citizens, a couple both over 70 years old.
Fred and Yvonne Edwards: Victims of the Tragedy
The victims of the fire were identified as Fred and Yvonne Edwards by the Passaic prosecutor’s office. The Passaic Fire Department rushed to the scene to find flames engulfing the apartment windows, reaching high into the sky.
Community’s Attempt to Help
Gelson Perez, a witness to the tragic event, recounted his futile efforts to assist. Despite his bravery, Perez was unable to rescue the couple. Neighbor Jade Kessel, who had lived above the elderly couple for over 15 years, also tried to help but was thwarted by the intensity of the blaze.
Red Cross Assistance and Investigation
Following the fire, the Red Cross provided aid to 10 people from 8 families, offering temporary lodging, food, and other immediate necessities. Thankfully, the additional evacuated families were able to return to their homes. Meanwhile, the Passaic prosecutor’s office initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire.
