TUCSON, Ariz. — The San Xavier Little League in Tucson, Arizona, faced a devastating blow last Thursday when Letty Montero, the league president, discovered that the storage shed at Manzanita Park had been robbed. The thieves made off with approximately $6,000 worth of brand new equipment, along with sentimental items, leaving Montero in tears.
Heartbreak for Volunteers
Letty Montero, deeply affected by the theft, expressed her anguish, stating, It’s just heartbreaking because all of us are volunteers. The league, comprising twenty-three teams, including the defending state champion senior boys, relied on the stolen equipment for their upcoming practice sessions, scheduled to begin later in the week.
Opportunistic Theft
Montero suspected that the theft occurred during an electrical outage the night before the discovery. She remarked, It was a perfect moment [for the thieves] to come in and get things. Promptly, Montero filed a police report and appealed to the community for assistance.
Community Response
The response from the community was overwhelming. Donations poured in, totaling around $10,000, as Southwest Tucson rallied behind its young athletes. Montero expressed gratitude, saying, It just warms my heart that this community and heart of Tucson is overwhelmingly supportive of our kids.
Unity in Action
As efforts to rebuild and support the league gained momentum, local businesses stepped up to help. A local welding company volunteered to enhance the storage lock system, demonstrating solidarity with the league’s cause. Montero emphasized, Other companies said they are going to help out with security to make sure this never happens again because our kids don’t deserve that.
