Mayor Eric Adams announces plans to enforce a curfew policy at the Randall’s Island Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center, following multiple violent altercations. This move aims to align with existing curfew regulations in traditional Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shelters, emergency shelters managed by the Department of Homeless Services (HPD), and New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) respite sites serving migrants and long-term New York City residents experiencing homelessness.

The curfew, scheduled to commence on March 20, will be enforced from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. This initiative reflects the city’s commitment to maintaining order and safety within the shelter premises.

Enhanced Security Measures

In addition to the curfew policy, the city has installed metal detectors at the Randall’s Island shelter. This decision follows a recent altercation where a 23-year-old migrant assaulted a security guard, resulting in arrests. This incident marks the third violent episode at the shelter in recent months, prompting officials to take swift action to prevent further incidents.

Approximately 3,000 migrants will be subject to the new curfew policy.
