NEW YORK: Persistent rainfall continues to inundate the NYC area, with more expected throughout the week, reports TLNA’s meteorologist Mike Woods.

Flood Watch Issued

A flood watch has been issued for significant portions of NYC, the Hudson Valley, NJ, CT, and Long Island, effective from this afternoon until Thursday. The ongoing rainstorm, accompanied by winds of 14 to 17 mph, is forecasted to persist. Temperatures will remain relatively steady, hovering around 51 degrees Fahrenheit.

Rainfall Projections

• Wednesday Night: Heaviest rainfall expected, with over 2 inches possible.
• Thursday Evening: NYC may accumulate over 2 inches, with parts of Long Island and Connecticut potentially seeing nearly 2 ½ inches.
• Thursday Morning to Afternoon: Anticipated rainfall between a tenth and quarter of an inch.

Storm Tracking

The strongest winds are anticipated during Thursday’s morning commute, with conditions persisting into the late afternoon. However, relief is in sight for NYC residents as Friday promises sunny skies with a high of 55 degrees. Nonetheless, minor coastal flooding remains a concern for the weekend, as rain is forecasted to return, potentially adding another 1 to 2 inches.

Flood Risk Assessment

Tuesday saw approximately ½ an inch of rainfall in New York City and northern New Jersey, with lower totals recorded in Long Island and Connecticut. Moderate flooding is expected along the South Shore and Long Island.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), soil moisture levels are significantly elevated, posing a heightened risk of flooding. The NWS warns that successive rain events will further saturate the soil, increasing the threat of urban and river flooding. Significant flooding risks persist throughout the entire area.
