In a tragic turn of events, a 16-year-old boy has been charged as an adult in connection with a February mass shooting in Gresham, Chicago, resulting in the death of three individuals, including a 14-year-old boy.
Background of the Incident
On February 25, the 16-year-old perpetrator was admitted into a residence on South Vincennes Avenue, Gresham, as he was acquainted with a young man who had connections to the family living there, according to police reports. An altercation ensued, during which the teenager brandished a handgun, firing upon all individuals present in the room.
Victims of the Shooting
The victims of this tragic incident include a 14-year-old boy identified as Amere P. Deese, who succumbed to a gunshot wound in his back, a 36-year-old man who later died at the University of Chicago Medical Center after sustaining a gunshot to the chest, and a 20-year-old man identified as Ladeverett West Ringgold, who passed away at Christ Hospital following a gunshot to the abdomen. Additionally, a 16-year-old survived the attack but sustained injuries and is in fair condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Arrest and Identification
Following the shooting, surveillance footage aided detectives in identifying the perpetrator, who subsequently fled the scene. He was later apprehended at a relative’s residence in Hazel Crest.
Sequence of Events
Ringgold, one of the victims, resided in the house where the shooting occurred. He, along with the other victims, was gathered in a bedroom when the incident transpired. The group was reportedly handling a rifle before it was placed behind a television set. Later, the suspect and his 13-year-old brother arrived at the scene. After joining the group and partaking in cannabis consumption, the suspect left the room briefly, only to return wielding a handgun. Despite instructions to retrieve the rifle, the suspect’s brother instead handed it over, following which the suspect indiscriminately fired upon the victims.
Investigation Details
Authorities recovered six spent shell casings from the scene but were unable to retrieve the firearm used in the shooting. During the investigation, four witnesses positively identified both the suspect and his brother from photographs.
