Los Angeles, March 21, 2024 – Prosecutors are urging a judge to strip Rebecca Grossman, convicted in a fatal crash, of her jailhouse phone privileges due to alleged misconduct during calls with her family. Grossman, co-founder of the Grossman Burn Foundation, was found guilty of second-degree murder and other charges for a 2020 crash in Westlake Village that killed two boys.
Allegations of Misconduct in Jailhouse Calls
Deputy District Attorneys Ryan Gould and Jamie Castro filed a motion citing Grossman’s alleged violations of court orders and discussions of potential criminal activities during phone calls with her husband and daughter. They accuse Grossman of attempting to influence witnesses and court proceedings, including discussions about disclosing protected evidence and seeking a new trial.
Prosecution’s Request for Restriction
The prosecution is seeking a court order to restrict Grossman’s access to telephones, calls, and visits, limiting her interactions to her legal team. They argue that such restrictions are necessary to prevent further misconduct and ensure the integrity of the legal process.
Defense Response
Grossman’s defense team has not responded to the prosecution’s request. However, they have previously argued against the allegations and have contested the verdict, claiming that the crash was caused by her then-boyfriend, former Dodger pitcher Scott Erickson.
Jury Tampering Allegations
Additionally, prosecutors allege that Grossman’s defense team engaged in jury tampering by sending a private investigator to contact jurors at their homes without proper identification. They argue that such actions undermine the fairness of the trial and call for the disclosure of jurors’ personal information.
Sentencing and Possible Consequences
Grossman, who has been in jail since her conviction, faces a lengthy prison sentence of up to 34 years to life. Sentencing is scheduled for April 10, where the judge will consider the prosecution’s motion and other factors before determining Grossman’s fate.
Upholding Legal Integrity
The allegations of misconduct in jailhouse calls and jury tampering raise serious concerns about the integrity of the legal process surrounding Rebecca Grossman’s case. As the sentencing date approaches, the court must carefully consider these issues to ensure that justice is served and the rights of all parties involved are protected.
