Indiana State Troopers made a significant drug bust earlier this week, recovering an estimated $1.1 million worth of illegal drugs from a semi-truck on Interstate 70 in Putnam County.
Routine Stop Leads to Major Discovery
On Tuesday around 2 p.m., a trooper stopped a white Freightliner tractor-trailer driving eastbound near mile-marker 41 on I-70 for a routine Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance inspection. However, what unfolded next was far from ordinary.
Suspicious Indicators Prompt Search
Indiana State Police reported that during the inspection, the trooper observed criminal indicators while speaking with the driver. Subsequently, the trooper obtained consent to search the tractor-trailer.
Significant Findings Uncovered
The search revealed a substantial amount of illegal substances hidden within the vehicle. Troopers discovered 70 pounds of cocaine, 45 pounds of marijuana, and over $47,000 in cash. Authorities believe the drugs were being transported from Los Angeles to Indianapolis.
Arrest Made, Charges Filed
The driver of the semi, whose identity has not been disclosed as of Friday afternoon, was arrested without incident. The individual was booked into the Putnam County Jail on charges including dealing narcotics (a Level 2 Felony) and dealing marijuana (a Level 5 Felony).
Estimated Street Value Confirmed
Indiana State Police confirmed that the expected street value of the seized drugs is $100,000 for the marijuana and $1 million for the cocaine, totaling $1.1 million.
