After the recent gubernatorial debate in Indianapolis, Republican candidates who didn’t make the stage are making their voices heard on the debate’s proceedings and the status of their campaigns.
Candidates Present in Tuesdayโs Debate
The debate, hosted by FOX59/CBS4, featured four candidates polling above 5% in recent Emerson College/The Hill polls:
- U.S. Senator Mike Braun (R-Ind.)
- Brad Chambers, former Indiana Secretary of Commerce
- Suzanne Crouch, Indiana’s current lieutenant governor
- Eric Doden, former president of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation
However, two notable candidates, Curtis Hill, Indiana’s former attorney general, and Jamie Reitenour, were excluded from the debate despite polling at 2.4% and 1.6%, respectively.
Curtis Hill’s Perspective
Curtis Hill expressed disappointment at being excluded, stating the debate was lackluster without his participation. He criticized the high grades given to Governor Eric Holcomb’s COVID-19 response, advocating for a stricter assessment.
Hill highlighted his experience as attorney general, contrasting it with Braun’s perceived establishment ties. He emphasized the need for governance expertise in candidates, particularly regarding fiscal policy.
Jamie Reitenourโs Response
Jamie Reitenour, also excluded from the debate, voiced concern over the limited diversity of perspectives presented. She criticized the candidates’ responses as scripted, advocating for genuine representation.
Despite being sidelined, Reitenour remains engaged, emphasizing the importance of inclusive political discourse. She pledged to continue advocating for the issues important to Hoosiers.
Grassroots Campaigning and Future Plans
Reitenour’s campaign focuses on engaging undecided voters through grassroots efforts. Her team strategically reaches out to communities statewide, prioritizing direct interaction over traditional media.
When questioned about her post-primary plans, Reitenour drew inspiration from the biblical tale of David and Goliath, emphasizing her commitment to serving Indiana’s people.
Upholding Personal Freedom and Autonomy
Both Hill and Reitenour’s perspectives reflect a commitment to inclusive governance and grassroots engagement. Their exclusion from the debate highlights the need for diverse voices in political discourse, ensuring all viewpoints are represented. As the gubernatorial race progresses, their campaigns serve as reminders of the importance of personal freedom and autonomy in political decision-making.
