TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona National Guard initiated construction on a new facility in the Tucson area, marking a significant development for the local community. Major General Karry Muehlenbeck, the Adjutant General for the Arizona National Guard, emphasized the community-oriented nature of the project, highlighting its importance beyond military purposes.
Enhancing Community Assets: The Tucson Readiness Center
The project, in the works since 2014, aims to complement Tucson’s existing National Guard infrastructure, such as the armory on Valencia Road. Spanning 35 acres, the Tucson Readiness Center on Rita Road will provide space for training and operational activities crucial for service members.
Key Features and Functions
Calvin L. Monroe, a deputy at the Construction and Facilities Management Office, detailed the center’s components, including a main readiness center, a storage unit, and a maintenance building. These facilities will support the training needs of the Arizona Army National Guard’s 222nd and 2220th Transportation Companies.
Strategic Location and Operational Benefits
The selection of Rita Road was strategic, offering proximity to Interstate 10, facilitating efficient transportation for missions. Colonel Peggy Gruenwald highlighted the logistical advantages, emphasizing the center’s role in expediting interstate movements during federal missions.
Economic Impact: Boosting Local Businesses
Beyond its military functions, the Tucson Readiness Center is poised to stimulate economic activity in the surrounding area. With an anticipated influx of over 300 soldiers for training, businesses nearby stand to benefit from increased patronage and spending.
Community Integration and Future Outlook
Gruenwald noted that some soldiers may opt to reside closer to the Rita Road area, fostering further integration between the military and local communities. As construction progresses toward completion by the end of 2025, the center is expected to become a vibrant hub of activity during training missions.
