Oakland, Calif. – Blue Shield of California, The Clorox Company, Kaiser Permanente, and PG&E have announced a collaborative effort to enhance security measures for their employees working in downtown Oakland. The initiative, totaling $10 million, aims to address safety concerns and bolster community well-being in the area.

Enhancing Downtown Safety

The partnership, unveiled by the four major employers, entails the establishment of an Uptown/Downtown Safe Zone in coordination with local law enforcement and city officials. While specifics of the plan were not disclosed initially, the companies emphasized its alignment with recent endeavors led by Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, Governor Gavin Newsom, and California Attorney General Rob Bonta to tackle crime issues in the city.

Patti Poppe, CEO of PG&E Corporation, expressed the urgency behind the initiative, stating, The partners involved in this effort saw a need to take quick, meaningful action on behalf of our coworkers and neighbors in Oakland. She highlighted the intention to assess the program’s efficacy and adapt as necessary to foster a safer environment for all residents.

Comprehensive Safety Measures

The forthcoming security measures include:

• Visible and responsive security presence in downtown areas.
• Funding support for the Oakland Uptown Downtown Community Benefit District’s Ambassador program, offering on-demand escort services for employees.
• Employee safety training initiatives.
• Subsidized transportation options for commuting to and from work and local destinations.
