The State of Arizona experienced a staggering 20% surge in new HIV cases in 2022, marking the highest increase rate since the peak of the HIV/AIDS Pandemic in the late 1980s. The surge primarily affects young adults, particularly those aged between 25 to 29 and 30 to 34, according to reports from the Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDHS).

Factors Contributing to the Surge

Officials attribute this spike in cases to a combination of factors. One significant cause was the decline in HIV testing during the COVID-19 Pandemic, followed by a subsequent increase in testing post-pandemic. Ricardo Fernandez, the Chief of HIV and Hepatitis C at AZDHS, highlighted that alongside this trend, there are indications of newer cases contributing to the upsurge compared to previous years.

Collaborative Efforts to Tackle the Crisis

To address this pressing issue, AZDHS is collaborating with multiple partners and implementing various programs. These efforts include initiatives to connect individuals with Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) medication. PrEP, when taken as prescribed, has shown a 99% effectiveness in preventing HIV contraction.

The department also reports a successful rate of nearly 80% in linking diagnosed individuals to HIV-related services within 30 days of diagnosis. Fernandez emphasizes that HIV has evolved into a manageable health condition, enabling individuals to lead healthy lives if they adhere to proper medical care and consistently take prescribed medications.

Personal Narratives Emphasize Progress and Hope

Joseph A. Gaxiola, a person living with HIV, reflects on the drastic changes in perceptions and treatment over the years. Recalling the 1990s when HIV/AIDS was considered a death sentence, Gaxiola shares his own experience of receiving a dire prognosis from a doctor, predicting a very limited lifespan. However, with access to medications and medical guidance, Gaxiola defied the odds and is now 52 years old, living a healthy life.

He recalls an impactful gesture he made to those facing a similar situation, offering a $20 bill as a wager, affirming that adherence to medication could lead to an “undetectable” status—a state akin to remission in simpler terms—highlighting the substantial advancements in treatment and care for HIV.

While the surge in HIV cases in Arizona raises concerns, the progress made in transforming HIV from a once-debilitating condition to a manageable one offers hope. However, it underscores the need for continued awareness, access to testing, and consistent medical care to curb the spread of the virus and support individuals living with HIV.
