Lake County Celebrates the Legacy of a Furry Law Enforcement Icon

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office bids farewell to K9 Dax, a beloved member of their team, as he retires after years of exemplary service alongside Deputy John Forlenza. Here’s a closer look at their remarkable journey together and the impact they’ve made.

A Legacy of Service

Joining the force in the spring of 2015 at just 13 months old, K9 Dax quickly became an integral part of the team. Throughout his tenure, he has achieved remarkable feats, including:

• Locating over 400 missing persons
• Apprehending fleeing felons
• Seizing illegal drugs, firearms, and vehicles
• Participating in numerous community demonstrations

Recognition and Awards

K9 Dax’s outstanding contributions have not gone unnoticed. He has received several accolades, including:

• 2019 American Humane Hero Dog – Law Enforcement Winner
• 2017 ASIS International (Illinois North Shore Chapter) – Law Enforcement Officer of the Year
• 2018 K9s of Valor Foundation – K9 of the Year

A Well-Deserved Rest

Unfortunately, K9 Dax sustained injuries while apprehending a suspect on March 3, 2024, leading to his retirement. Despite intensive physical therapy, he could no longer return to active duty due to health reasons. Sheriff John D. Idleburg granted Dax’s retirement request, allowing him to enjoy his golden years with Deputy Forlenza and his family.

Deputy Forlenza expressed his gratitude for Dax’s service, stating, His service has been exemplary, and most importantly, he has saved countless lives, including my own.
