SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (TLNA) – As the digital world becomes increasingly accessible, experts are sounding the alarm about the enduring effects of social media on young people. On Monday, April 8, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Health Department and Thunder Mountain Community Church, hosted a Town Talk event aimed at shedding light on the mental health implications of social media for teenagers.
CCSO Operations Commander Robert Watkins emphasized the dangers inherent in granting children unrestricted access to smartphones. I brought pain and suffering into my household because it is so easy to destroy someone by using a cell phone or social media, he remarked. Watkins highlighted the unknown hazards associated with social media, stating, The world in which our children are growing up, our culture has not adapted to that. We don’t have the societal structure in place to protect our youth.
Watkins stressed the significance of parental involvement and collaboration with law enforcement and educators in mitigating these risks. He cautioned that when a child receives a phone, it’s not just access to the world they gain, but rather the world gaining access to them.
Recent events underscore the urgency of these conversations. The Sierra Vista Police Department is currently investigating a tragic incident involving the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old boy. Initial reports suggest that the teen may have been in a parked car, potentially filming a TikTok video with two other juveniles when the incident occurred.
Watkins emphasized that addressing the dangers of social media requires a multifaceted approach. We aren’t going to arrest our way out of this crisis, and we aren’t going to educate ourselves out of this crisis. We have to come together and start solving this issue collectively, he stated.
