Houston’s Literacy Initiative Gathers Momentum

As part of its commitment to fostering education in the community, KHOU 11 launches the Turn The Page campaign, aimed at improving literacy rates among children in Houston.

The Stakes for Literacy

Children who struggle with reading by the end of Grade 3 face significant challenges in their academic journey. Research indicates that without intervention, these children have a slim chance of catching up, with a higher likelihood of dropping out of school. Moreover, statistics reveal that 61% of low-income families in the United States do not have any books at home, further exacerbating the literacy gap.

A Collaborative Effort

KHOU 11 has joined forces with Books Between Kids, a Houston-based nonprofit organization, to address the issue of book accessibility outside of school. Since 2016, the partnership has made considerable strides, providing over 100,000 books to local children. This year, the aim is to distribute over 20,000 books to children in need.

Ways to Contribute

Supporting the Turn The Page campaign is easy and accessible:

  1. Monetary Donations: Individuals can contribute financially through an online donation portal.
  2. Book Purchases: Books can be purchased online, with proceeds going towards the campaign.
  3. Book Donations: New or gently used books can be dropped off at various sponsor and community partner locations.

Virtual Telethon

To rally further support, KHOU 11 will host a virtual telethon on Thursday, April 18, from 5 to 7 pm. Viewers can call 713-654-1111 on the day of the telethon to make their donations.

Acknowledgments

KHOU 11 extends its gratitude to its sponsors and community partners, including Exclusive Furniture, Rich’s Car Wash, Select Houston Public Library Locations, Blue Willow Bookshop, City of Pearland, Pearland ISD, and Duchesne Academy.
