LAS VEGAS, Nev. – A Clark County Family Court judge is set to decide if a minor charged in the beating death of a high school student will face adult charges, with a deadline looming.

Judge Amy Mastin will hear arguments on the matter on May 8, as confirmed by Clark County prosecutor Summer Clarke.

Jonathan Lewis, aged 17, tragically lost his life after being beaten in an alley near Rancho High School last November. Las Vegas police swiftly arrested nine suspects and identified a tenth. Presently, four of those suspects have been charged with second-degree murder as adults, while the remaining, aged 16 or younger, are facing charges in juvenile court.

Legal Proceedings Unfold

The legal proceedings have been unfolding rapidly. Recently, four teens accused of the beating death of Jonathan Lewis, accompanied by their attorneys, appeared in court.

Clark County District Court Judge Tiera Jones denied attempts to dismiss murder charges for the four older teens. This decision comes after all four were indicted by a Clark County grand jury on murder and conspiracy charges earlier this year.

Habeas Corpus Petition Denied

Efforts by lawyers for the teens to dismiss the indictment through a petition of writ of habeas corpus were met with denial. The argument put forth by the defense suggested that their clients acted in self-defense after Lewis initiated the altercation. However, Judge Jones emphasized that the grand jury’s role is not to establish guilt or innocence but to determine whether a crime has been committed.

In her ruling, Judge Jones highlighted, The evidence presented demonstrates Defendant’s participation in a series of acts which resulted in beating and causing harm to the victim.

Trial Date Set

Court records indicate that the teens’ trial is scheduled for Monday, August 19. As the legal proceedings continue, the community awaits the outcome of this tragic case.
