Gaylord Churchill Long, 88, and Benita Collins Long, 86, are commemorating their remarkable 66th wedding anniversary at a retirement community in east Louisville. Their enduring love story, woven with nostalgic threads of Louisville’s history, reflects a lifetime of cherished memories.
Gaylord, a native of Louisville, spent his youth as a lifeguard at the now-vanished Shelby Park pool in 1957. It was there, amidst playful splashes and youthful exuberance, that he first crossed paths with Benita, who hailed from Letcher County. Benita’s journey to Louisville, initially to visit her aunt and explore educational opportunities, unexpectedly intertwined with Gaylord’s life, setting the stage for a timeless romance.
Their inaugural date, a cinematic excursion to see Gone With The Wind at the iconic Loew’s Palace Theatre (now Louisville Palace Theatre), preceded a lifelong commitment sealed on Feb. 16, 1957.
The tapestry of their lives extends beyond their love story, encompassing individual pursuits and shared passions. Gaylord pursued higher education at the University of Virginia, Sullivan Business College, and the University of Louisville Speed School, culminating in an engineering degree. His professional journey led him to a fulfilling career as an engineer at Brown and Williamson. Meanwhile, Benita’s educational path from Whitesburg High School to Sullivan Business College equipped her for a role as a purchasing agent at the Jefferson County Board of Education.
In the tapestry of their shared experiences, travel and music feature prominently. The couple indulged their wanderlust, exploring new horizons while nurturing their shared love for jazz through participation in a local band. Today, their days are serenely spent together at The Grand Senior Living center, a testament to their enduring companionship.
Reflecting on the secret to their enduring marriage, Gaylord whimsically advises always saying yes, a philosophy that has undoubtedly enriched their journey together. Their love story is further enriched by the presence of their two children, Sheree and Gaylord Timothy, who undoubtedly embody the legacy of their enduring bond.
As Gaylord and Benita celebrate this milestone, their story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us all of the enduring power of love and commitment.
