Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) suspects that the teenager shot at Waterfront Park following Thunder Over Louisville was intentionally targeted. The incident, which occurred near the Purple Lot, was not deemed random by law enforcement officials. According to Mayor Craig Greenberg, the victim reported hearing his name called just before the shooting took place.
The shooting transpired in a parking lot situated directly beneath Interstate 65 around 10:30 p.m. LMPD, along with Kentucky State Police and EMS crews, promptly responded to the scene following the incident. Upon arrival, officers discovered a teenage male suffering from a gunshot wound.
Community Response and Concerns
Andre Yates, a native of Louisville, expressed his dismay over the incident, particularly its occurrence after a family-oriented event like Thunder Over Louisville. He questioned the motive behind such an act of violence, emphasizing the danger it posed to the public. Despite acknowledging the efforts of law enforcement, Yates lamented the situation, expressing a wish for its avoidance.
Yates highlighted the apparent randomness of the attack and expressed relief that the victim’s injuries were not more severe. He voiced concern over the escalating trend of youth violence and underscored the need for preventive measures within the community.
Ongoing Investigation
LMPD’s Non-Fatal Shooting Unit has assumed responsibility for the investigation but has yet to make any arrests or identify suspects. The department remains committed to diligently pursuing leads to ensure justice for the victim and his family.
