Amidst ongoing tensions surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict, the University of Massachusetts Amherst finds itself under federal investigation for allegations of discrimination.
Context of the Investigations
The U.S. Department of Education is currently scrutinizing numerous colleges across the nation for discriminatory practices, with a particular focus on allegations of antisemitism and anti-Palestinian actions following the Israel-Hamas conflict. Since the outbreak of the war on October 7, college campuses nationwide have become hotbeds of activism and protest.
Tensions on College Campuses
Students from coast to coast have erected encampments to protest against the Israeli military’s actions in Gaza, where the death toll among Palestinians has surpassed 30,000, and the risk of famine looms large. The conflict, which claimed the lives of approximately 1,200 Palestinians in the initial Hamas attack, has led to heightened tensions and demonstrations.
Federal Oversight
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights is actively investigating colleges and universities for potential violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in institutions receiving federal funding. Currently, there are 137 open investigations, with 93 initiated after October 7.
