As the one-year anniversary of the Davis Stabbing killings approaches, the community gathers to honor the victims and reflect on the tragic events that unfolded.
Remembering David Breaux
David Breaux, aged 50, was one of three victims of the Davis Stabbing killings. He tragically lost his life on April 27. Known affectionately as The Compassion Guy, Breaux’s legacy extends beyond his untimely death. In 2013, he inspired the creation of the Compassion Corner and Compassion Bench, a gathering and listening place in Davis. This corner, located at B St and Third St, serves as a testament to Breaux’s commitment to fostering community connection and empathy.
Honoring Karim Abou Najm
Karim Abou Najm, aged 20, was another victim of the Davis Stabbing tragedy, losing his life on April 29. As a Davis Senior High School graduate and nearly completing his studies at UC Davis, Abou Najm’s potential was tragically cut short. To commemorate his life, the City of Davis and UC Davis will unveil a memorial bench in Sycamore Park, where Abou Najm’s life was taken. Additionally, a section of the bike path from Sycamore Lane to the 113 overcrossing at Sycamore Park will be renamed in his honor. A scholarship has been established in Abou Najm’s name to support aspiring students in their academic pursuits.
Supporting Kimberlee Gilroy
Kimberlee Gilroy, aged 65, survived the stabbing but endured multiple wounds. The community rallied around her, raising over $60,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to assist with her hospital bills and help secure permanent housing. Gilroy’s resilience serves as a beacon of hope amidst the tragedy.
A Call for Compassion and Kindness
As the community comes together to remember Breaux, Abou Najm, and Gilroy, the City of Davis emphasizes the importance of compassion and kindness. In a time of remembrance, they urge individuals to honor the memory of the victims by supporting one another and leading with empathy.
