Harris Teeter Tragedy
25-year-old Darrius Cornell White, hailing from Chesapeake, faced justice with three life sentences after being convicted of aggravated murder, two counts of robbery causing death, and three firearm use charges. Commonwealth’s Attorney Colin D. Stolle for Virginia Beach announced the sentencing following the tragic incident at a Harris Teeter gas station.
Unforgiving Words from the Bench
Judge James C. Lewis didn’t mince words during the sentencing, telling White that his nature seemed irredeemable: Your DNA has an evil streak that can’t be rehabilitated, changed, or eliminated.
The Harrowing Incident
Darrius White and his brother, Michael White, perpetrated the crime while driving a stolen vehicle. Their target was Annie Smith and her husband, Stephen, who were refueling their car at the Harris Teeter in the Haygood Shopping Center. Michael, masked with a bandana, robbed Stephen at gunpoint while Darrius demanded property from Annie and fatally shot her three times in the chest.
Fleeing the Scene
After the ruthless act, the White brothers fled to Chesapeake, taking with them Annie Smith’s firearm, which was concealed in her vehicle. Their attempt to evade justice was short-lived as the owner of the stolen vehicle spotted them, leading to the vehicle’s abandonment. Police recovered ample evidence from the vehicle, including fingerprints belonging to the White brothers.
Confession and Legal Outcome
On December 15, both brothers sought medical help, claiming suicidal tendencies. Later, they confessed to their involvement in Annie Smith’s murder and robbery. Michael White pleaded guilty to several charges and received a 50-year prison sentence. Darrius White’s criminal record, which includes assault charges and probation violations, underscores the severity of the crime.
Conclusion: A Tragic Loss and the Pursuit of Justice
The senseless violence that claimed Annie Smith’s life underscores the importance of effective law enforcement and justice. The swift conviction and sentencing of the perpetrator, Darrius Cornell White, serve as a reminder of society’s commitment to holding accountable those who commit such heinous acts.
