After being nestled in historic William Land Park since its inception in 1927, the Sacramento Zoo is considering a move to the neighboring city of Elk Grove pending a vote by the city council. Talks between Elk Grove and the Sacramento Zoological Society have been ongoing for several years, with the city already securing land on its southern end for the potential relocation.
Key Points to Consider
Current Location
The Sacramento Zoo currently occupies a corner of William Land Park, spanning just over 14 acres, located south of downtown Sacramento.
Reasons for Relocation
The move is prompted by limitations at the current site, which hinder expansion and necessitate extensive renovations to meet modern standards for housing certain animals. The zoo has already lost several iconic animals due to these constraints, including a tiger, hippo, and bear.
Proposed Site
Elk Grove, which became an independent city in 2000, has the option to acquire land for the new zoo in its southern region, an area ripe for development in the coming years. The proposed site is near Kammerer Road and Lotz Parkway, situated west of Highway 99 and Sky River Casino.
Financing and Construction
The initial phase of the project is estimated to cost around $300 million. Elk Grove City Council has pledged $90 million, with the remainder to be sourced from bond financing, developer fees, and contributions from community partners, including the Zoological Society.
What’s in Store for the New Zoo?
Details regarding the design and layout of the new facility are still being finalized. However, preliminary renderings depict plans for indoor and outdoor dining areas overlooking animal habitats, recreational spaces interspersed throughout the zoo, and expansive areas for the animals to roam.
Approval from the Elk Grove City Council would set plans into motion, with a potential opening projected within the next decade.
