The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) has unveiled a renovated space within the Family Advocacy Center, aiming to enhance support for victims, survivors, and their families.

Grant-Funded Revamp

Thanks to a grant from New Mexico’s Crime Victims Reparation Commission, the Family Advocacy Center now boasts a revamped lobby, offering a more welcoming environment for those seeking assistance and resources.

The updated space is intended to bolster public safety efforts by providing a comfortable and supportive setting for individuals navigating challenging circumstances.

Welcoming Environment

Mayor Tim Keller emphasized the importance of the Family Advocacy Center, noting its role in assisting the community during difficult times. He highlighted the significance of creating a welcoming space where victims and their families can feel safe and supported.

Healing Spaces

Beyond cosmetic enhancements like fresh paint and new furniture, the site features amenities designed to promote healing and comfort. A snack bar and a dedicated kids’ corner aim to make visits more accommodating. Additionally, the inclusion of healing-focused plants, chosen by city horticulturist Dan Humbles, adds a therapeutic element to the environment.

Tribute to Victims

Special decorations within the remodeled lobby serve as tributes to those affected by crime. A butterfly tree, donated by Ryan Saavedra Sr. in memory of his son, who was a victim of homicide in 2021, stands as a poignant symbol of remembrance and resilience.

Commitment to Support

APD Chief Harold Medina reiterated the center’s commitment to supporting survivors and families impacted by crime. He emphasized the importance of providing comprehensive services and care to those in need, ensuring they feel safe and supported throughout their journey of healing and recovery.
