Protest Escalation Prompts Security Measures
Denver – Auraria Campus faced a second consecutive lockdown as protests against the Gaza conflict intensified. Amid demonstrations led by Students for a Democratic Society, 12 individuals received summonses for trespassing and interference after setting up tents in the Tivoli Student Union.
Campus Response and Lockdown
The Auraria Higher Education Center issued a statement expressing concern over the escalation of protest activities, emphasizing the need to maintain operational stability. Campus police intervened, issuing warnings to demonstrators to vacate the premises. While some complied peacefully, others were summoned for trespassing-related charges.
Emergency Alerts and Normal Operations
An emergency alert was disseminated via social media, advising people to avoid the area. Normal campus operations resumed later, albeit with continued closure of the Tivoli until the following day.
Persistent Pro-Palestine Demonstrations
The protests, primarily advocating for divestment and condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza, have been ongoing. Auraria Campus, comprising Metropolitan State University of Denver, University of Colorado Denver, and Community College of Denver, has been a focal point for such demonstrations.
Campus Operations and Commencement
Despite the disruptions, Auraria Campus, MSU Denver, and CU Denver maintain regular operations. However, Community College of Denver transitioned to remote operations, indicating the impact of ongoing protests on campus activities.
