Article: LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Metro Police said an alleged homicide suspect has been injured following an investigation in the Wilder Park neighborhood.
According to Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel, LMPD’s Criminal Extradition Division was conducting surveillance in the area of South Third Street and West Kenton Street regarding an ongoing homicide investigation.
Detectives in the area said they noticed a suspect from one of many homicides that occurred last week.
She said when the 17-year-old individual, he “displayed” a gun and began to run from detectives.
However, the detectives tackled the teen and began to “wrestle for the gun” in his hands.
Gwinn-Villaroel said the teen was given multiple orders to let go of the gun, he allegedly fired the gun. An officer returned fire, hitting the teen at least once, she said.
Officers provided aid to the teen until medical personnel arrived. The teen was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Some residents in the Wilder Park neighborhood said they aren’t surprised about the officer shooting the 17-year-old during a struggle. Kim, who declined to give her last name, was at home when the shooting happened.
It’s getting scary and it’s getting worse and everyday its something somehow some sort, she explained.
Kim walked outside and saw police vehicles everywhere. She has lived in the area for 25 years and said the neighborhood has changed over last few years.
None of the officers or anyone else in the area were injured.
“At this time, we believe there is not any further danger to the public in this area stemming from this incident,” Gwinn-Villaroel said.
After a weekend where LMPD is investigating seven shootings that left five people dead in a 24-hour period, the chief is urging the public for help in solving these crimes.
“Our officers are actively policing our community and we will continue to do that,” she said. “I encourage the community to please encourage one another to speak up and speak out against the senseless gun violence that has taken place in our city and those individuals who do not value life.”
A police search that escalated in matter of minutes now has some residents hoping this will be a wake-up call to the homicide suspect.
I just pray that he pulls through and you know get his life together whatever it is that caused him to be in all this chaos, Kim said.
LMPD said they plan to release the body cam video within 10 business days.
