UWM Armed Robbery Incident
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on May 10 in front of Cambridge Commons, a residence hall at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. A student reported that an individual brandishing a firearm stole her friend’s expensive glasses, valued at approximately $5,000, before fleeing the scene in a gray Infiniti, according to a criminal complaint.
Involvement of Suspects
Alante James was identified as a suspect, with surveillance footage capturing him fleeing the scene in the aforementioned vehicle. Additional footage from inside Cambridge Commons revealed James and Braemmert, along with others, entering the residence hall earlier that evening. The complaint further alleges that Braemmert left the hall and joined James in the Infiniti, where James was seen stealing the glasses and aiming a gun at someone before fleeing.
Police Pursuit and Arrests
On the afternoon of May 12, police officers spotted the gray Infiniti near Sherman and Villard and attempted to pull the vehicle over. However, the driver, identified as Jamarius Smith-Freeman, evaded the officers and led them on a high-speed chase reaching speeds of approximately 90 mph. The pursuit concluded when the driver lost control of the vehicle, colliding with another car and a fire hydrant. All three suspects attempted to flee on foot but were apprehended shortly after.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Alante James faces charges including armed robbery, possession of a machine gun, and misdemeanor resisting/obstructing an officer. He entered a plea of not guilty on May 17, with a cash bond set at $10,000.
James Braemmert is charged with possession of a machine gun, two counts of felony bail jumping, and misdemeanor resisting/obstructing an officer. He pleaded not guilty on May 18, with a cash bond set at $65,000.
Jamarius Smith-Freeman faces charges of fleeing police, second-degree recklessly endangering safety, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a machine gun, and misdemeanor resisting/obstructing an officer. He also pleaded not guilty, with a cash bond set at $25,000 on May 17.
