In downtown Atlanta, a significant water main break near the intersection of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW and J.P. Brawley Drive has prompted authorities to issue a boil water advisory, affecting various government offices, businesses, and residents across the metro area.
Impact on Government Offices and Businesses
The rupture of a 48-inch and 36-inch transmission line has caused water outages and low water pressure throughout the downtown service area. Several key locations have been forced to close their doors, including:
- Fulton County government offices
- Atlanta City Hall
- Georgia Aquarium
- College Football Hall of Fame
- Zoo Atlanta
- Grady Memorial Hospital
The Fulton County offices Downtown, including the Fulton County Government Center and Courthouse, have shuttered temporarily. Additionally, various businesses in the vicinity, such as the Georgia Aquarium and the College Football Hall of Fame, have been affected. While the Georgia Aquarium assured the public that the outage did not impact the animals, they closed for the day to address the issue. Similarly, Zoo Atlanta closed early due to water pressure concerns but assured the public of contingency plans to provide water for all animals.
Grady Memorial Hospital has also been impacted, with all elective and non-urgent procedures and appointments being canceled for patient safety.
Transportation and Infrastructure Impacts
The water main break has affected MARTA services, with water shut off at multiple stations, including West End, Lakewood, Five Points, and others. Furthermore, Atlanta City Hall operations have been disrupted by the incident.
Boil Water Advisory and Repair Efforts
The Department of Watershed Management has issued a boil water advisory for Metro Atlanta residents and businesses impacted by the break. Until repairs are completed, affected individuals are advised to boil all water for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene purposes or to use bottled water. Repair efforts are underway, with crews working to address the rupture. However, major repairs are not expected to commence until after 5 p.m. to allow sufficient time for businesses and homeowners to prepare for the outage.
Atlanta Watershed Management has not provided an estimated time for the completion of repairs. The situation is still developing, with updates expected as the repair process progresses. NEWS.ORG 5 will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
