The Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Showcase concluded its second week with the Gem and Jam Music Festival at the Pima County Fairgrounds in Tucson, Arizona. Originally held at the Slaughter House, the festival has evolved into a significant local and national musical showcase spanning three days.
Festival Growth and Community Impact
Over the years, the Gem and Jam Music Festival has solidified its presence in the Arizona and broader festival community, becoming a stalwart event. Josh Pollack, a key figure in the festival’s planning since 2013, highlighted the festival’s growth and enduring impact.
The festival’s expansion is a testament to the hard work required to organize and book such an event. Pollack emphasized the ongoing effort involved, stating, “As one festival ends, we’re starting to work on the next year already, it’s like this consistent cycle.” Planning involves assessing areas for improvement and identifying artists to target for the following year.
Eclectic Lineup: Spafford Takes the Stage
One noteworthy addition to this year’s festival lineup is Spafford, a band renowned for its diverse musical sets that traverse various genres. Drummer and Tucson native Nick Tkachyk provided insights into Spafford’s performance style, describing it as “80% original stuff, 20% covers.”
Tkachyk elaborated on the band’s musical diversity, encompassing funk, rock, electronic, disco, jazz, and R&B. He emphasized the vocal-driven nature of their original compositions, showcasing the group’s exceptional vocalists.
Spafford, no stranger to Gem and Jam, previously performed at the festival in 2014. Tkachyk expressed his affinity for the desert environment, stating, “I love the desert; I feel at home here. The air feels like I’m at home.”
The Sonic Experience: Gem and Jam’s Four Stages
According to both Pollack and Tkachyk, the music at Gem and Jam, presented across four different stages each day, is a significant crowd-pleaser. Tkachyk shared his honor in playing at such an event, emphasizing the impact he hopes Spafford and the festival will have on other bands and attendees.
Fostering Belonging and Community
Tkachyk expressed his aspirations for the festival to foster a sense of belonging and community among attendees. He stated, “I hope fans and the people who are experiencing the show come out with a sense of belonging and community.”
Harmonizing Music and Community
As the Gem and Jam Music Festival continues to evolve, it remains a harmonious blend of musical diversity and community spirit. With each passing year, the festival organizers strive to enhance the experience for both performers and attendees, creating an atmosphere where the love for music and the sense of community converge.
