In Fort Worth, Texas, members of a local non-profit gathered at Trinity Park to honor the memories of loved ones lost to gun violence. The event, held on National Gun Violence Awareness Day, provided a platform for individuals like Melinda Hamilton and Karen Johnson to share their stories and advocate for change.
The Tragic Losses Behind Mothers of Murdered Angels
Melinda Hamilton, the founder of Mothers of Murdered Angels, knows firsthand the devastating impact of gun violence. In 2018, her daughter, Shamicka Rodgriguez, fell victim to a drive-by shooting in Fort Worth. Tragically, just two years later, Hamilton’s grandson, Derek Johnson Jr., also lost his life to gun violence. These heartbreaking losses prompted Hamilton to establish Mothers of Murdered Angels, a non-profit dedicated to supporting families affected by similar tragedies.
Spreading Awareness and Offering Support
Hamilton and Johnson’s advocacy extends beyond sharing their personal experiences. Through donation drives and community events, they strive to steer young people away from violence and connect victims’ families with essential resources. The organization’s impact has even reached beyond state borders, with requests for assistance coming from across the country.
National Recognition and Advocacy Efforts
The tireless efforts of Mothers of Murdered Angels garnered national attention in 2022 when they were invited to the White House to join forces with other victims of gun violence. Reflecting on this experience, Hamilton expressed gratitude for the opportunity to raise awareness and honor their loved ones on a larger platform.
A Memorial for Angels Lost
At Trinity Park, where the vigil took place, memorial structures serve as poignant reminders of lives cut short by gun violence. Hamilton and Johnson aspire to create a lasting tribute to these victims by constructing a memorial in the downtown area or along Highway 820. Their goal is not only to remember those lost but also to enact meaningful change and provide support to those in need.
Advocating for Change and Healing
Despite the immense pain they’ve endured, Hamilton and Johnson remain steadfast in their commitment to preventing further tragedies. By sharing their stories, advocating for gun violence prevention measures, and offering support to affected families, they strive to create safer communities and honor the memories of those they’ve lost.
