The Illinois Tollway is bidding farewell to its clunky I-PASS transponders and embracing a new era with the introduction of radio frequency identification (RFID) stickers as the primary payment method. This transition has sparked curiosity among users about the fate of their existing transponders and the logistics of adapting to this innovative approach.
Transition Details and Current Transponder Status
The shift towards RFID stickers is already in progress, and these stickers are now readily available for use. Despite this, current transponders will remain active until their designated expiration date, according to tollway officials. This policy allows for a smooth transition period, ensuring that drivers have sufficient time to make the necessary adjustments.
Disposing of Expired Transponders
Once a transponder reaches its expiration date, the Illinois Tollway encourages users to dispose of them in an environmentally responsible manner. Drivers have the option to return the expired transponders to the Illinois Tollway directly or utilize the Earth911 website. By searching for “lithium-ion batteries” and entering their zip code, drivers can find available recycling locations for proper disposal.
Acquisition of New Stickers
The rollout of the new RFID stickers commenced last month, with initial availability at oases, participating Jewel-Osco stores, and the Tollway’s headquarters on Jan. 26. Additionally, the Tollway has announced plans for online orders and expanded availability at Jewel-Osco and RoadRanger stores in early February. These measures aim to provide users with convenient access to the new payment method.
Immediate Use and Compatibility
The newly introduced stickers can be immediately utilized on the Illinois Tollway system. However, officials highlight a potential 24-hour waiting period for their activation on the Chicago Skyway or for use in other states connected to the E-ZPass system.
Key Advantages of Stickers Over Transponders
One notable advantage of the RFID stickers is the absence of a deposit fee, differentiating them from the traditional transponders. The Tollway also emphasizes the flexibility for drivers to link multiple stickers to a single I-PASS account. This feature eliminates the need to transfer stickers between vehicles, streamlining the toll collection process for users.
Placement and Durability of Stickers
The Illinois Tollway provides clear guidelines on the placement of the RFID stickers. They are required to be mounted on the vehicle’s windshield near the rearview mirror, in the same location as the old transponders. Unlike transponders, stickers do not have a battery and are designed to last until removed from the vehicle, similar to license plate or city stickers.
Executive Perspective on RFID Sticker Tags
Cassaundra Rouse, the Executive Director of the Illinois Tollway, expressed enthusiasm about the adoption of RFID sticker tags. In a statement, she emphasized that these stickers represent the latest advancement in toll collection technology. Rouse highlighted the growing trend of toll agencies nationwide adopting sticker tags for a more convenient and reliable travel experience.
Embracing Convenience and Sustainability
The transition from traditional transponders to RFID stickers signifies a significant step forward for the Illinois Tollway in enhancing user experience and embracing environmental responsibility. With added convenience, flexibility, and a commitment to sustainable practices, the RFID sticker system aligns with modern trends in toll collection technology.
