LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas is grappling with a dire situation as they have taken in nearly 1000 animals since the start of the month. The influx has pushed the shelter to its limits, with makeshift housing arrangements set up to accommodate the overflow of animals.
A Desperate Situation
The Animal Foundation, a public shelter responsible for taking in stray and seized animals, is currently facing a critical overcrowding issue. As of recent reports, the shelter has received 989 animals, including a staggering 38 dogs from a single home. This includes a nursing mother and her four puppies, alongside four other pregnant dogs.
Hilarie Grey, CEO of the Animal Foundation, emphasized the severity of the situation, noting, We are the public shelter, so any stray animal, cruelty case, neglect cases like we had a story this week about some puppies that were left in a bucket by the side of the road, they all come in.
Managing Amidst Challenges
With summer exacerbating the intake rate due to increased animal activity and the upcoming Fourth of July fireworks, which often lead to more stray animals, the shelter is already critically overcrowded. Grey highlighted the urgency for support from the community: We need adopters, fosters, and rescue transfers to help us manage our population and ensure the well-being of our animals and staff.
Call to Action
The Animal Foundation is urging the public to step up and help alleviate the strain by participating in a special foster event on Friday, providing essential resources for those willing to foster animals. Grey emphasized the importance of community involvement in reuniting lost pets with their owners, citing a low reunion rate of only 36 percent due to outdated owner information and lack of microchips.
Conclusion: Support Needed Now
As the Animal Foundation continues to navigate this crisis, they stress the immediate need for adopters, fosters, and rescue transfers to stabilize their population and safeguard the welfare of animals in their care.
