El PASO, Texas — The future of the El Paso County Coliseum has been secured as the General Services Administration (GSA) has withdrawn plans to include it in the Bridge of the Americas (BOTA) port of entry modernization project. Originally slated for potential demolition under some GSA proposals, the coliseum’s preservation is now assured following community advocacy and official reassessment.
New Options Unveiled for BOTA Modernization
Three alternative plans will be presented in an upcoming meeting scheduled for June 26 at the Hilos de Plata Senior Center. These proposals aim to update the BOTA bridge while addressing community concerns. Alternative 1a involves land acquisition to the east, covering 13 acres. Alternative 4 includes minor land acquisition near the bridge and proposes the elimination of commercial cargo traffic. The third option is no action, maintaining the status quo without major changes.
According to local officials, none of these options involve acquiring land owned by El Paso County, providing reassurance to stakeholders worried about property impacts.
Community and Political Reaction
County Commissioner David Stout expressed relief and gratitude following the announcement, calling the decision a victory for preserving a historic county asset. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding community health and quality of life, particularly in the Chamizal area, which has long borne the environmental burden of heavy industry and highway traffic.
Stout endorsed Alternative 4 as the preferred solution, citing its potential to alleviate pollution and mitigate environmental impacts on the Chamizal community. This stance aligns with local sentiments reflected in recent protests against the BOTA expansion, where environmental concerns took center stage.
Conclusion: Securing a Community Legacy
The decision to exclude the El Paso County Coliseum from the BOTA modernization plans marks a significant win for local preservation efforts and community engagement. As discussions continue and new proposals are deliberated, the focus remains on balancing infrastructure development with environmental stewardship and community well-being.
