Albuquerque, N.M. – The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) is gearing up to bolster its presence in the downtown area this summer to ensure public safety and curb recent disturbances.
Enhanced Patrol Strategy
APD intends to deploy its specialty units including Horse-Mounted, Tactical, and Traffic units alongside officers from the Targeted Enforcement Active Monitoring (TEAMS) during the upcoming months. These units will collaborate closely with the 10 officers already stationed in the Downtown Unit to promptly respond to incidents and maintain order.
Recent Incidents and Response
Recent weekends have witnessed a surge in downtown activity, prompting APD to take proactive measures. Reports indicate multiple arrests, weapon confiscations, and intervention in altercations. Officers encountered challenges from what they termed as aggressive bystanders, underscoring the need for increased vigilance.
Chief’s Statement
APD Chief Harold Medina emphasized the department’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all downtown visitors. We want people to be able to come and enjoy downtown, but we want everyone to remain safe, said Chief Medina in a recent press release. By augmenting officer numbers and leveraging specialty units, we aim to address incidents swiftly. There will be zero tolerance for those who disrupt public peace or endanger others.
Duration of Operations
These enhanced operations are slated to continue throughout the summer, aimed at maintaining a secure and welcoming atmosphere in the downtown area.
