This Spring, University of Arizona Athletics, in partnership with The Local News App (TLNA), is continuing its tradition of honoring outstanding educators in Southern Arizona. Among nine deserving nominees, one will be awarded the prestigious title of Teacher of the Year. TLNA is thrilled to introduce you to all of this year’s remarkable candidates, shining a spotlight on their dedication, innovation, and impact in the classroom.

Michelle Tozer: Inspiring a Love for Biology

Today, we have the pleasure of meeting Michelle Tozer, a passionate educator who teaches 10th-grade Biology at Empire High School. Mrs. Tozer’s approach to teaching goes beyond the textbooks, as she engages her students with hands-on experiments and thought-provoking discussions.

In one memorable class activity, Mrs. Tozer explores the genetics of taste perception by having her students sample cilantro. Through this simple yet enlightening exercise, she demonstrates how genetic variations can influence our sensory experiences. It’s a testament to her commitment to making science accessible and engaging for her students.

A Journey of Dedication and Growth

Mrs. Tozer’s journey in education began in a middle school classroom within the Tucson Unified School District. However, her passion for teaching and her desire to work with high school students led her to Empire High School in Vail.

Reflecting on her transition to teaching high school biology, Mrs. Tozer shares her excitement for the opportunity to delve deeper into her favorite subject. Her dedication to her students’ learning is evident as she lays the groundwork for their future studies in Anatomy and Physiology.
