In a concerted effort to preserve the natural beauty of the Rio Grande, residents of Albuquerque took to the water on National River Clean-up Day. Organized by City Councilor Joaquin Baca, the event aimed to encourage community members to actively participate in maintaining the cleanliness of one of New Mexico’s largest rivers.

Protecting and Preserving the Rio Grande

The initiative was a collaborative endeavor between city leaders, community members, and local organizations. Parks & Recreation Director Dave Simon emphasized the importance of responsible river usage, highlighting the need to safeguard the Rio Grande for current and future generations.

Active Participation in Clean-up Efforts

Under the guidance of Baca and in collaboration with Quiet Waters Paddling Adventures and Kirtland Air Force Base Outdoor Recreation, participants rode rafts and kayaks along a seven-mile stretch of the river, collecting trash along the way. Notably, eight individuals selected through a random lottery, including those new to river rafting, joined the effort, enriching their connection to the river and its preservation.

Baca underscored the significance of fostering a sense of attachment and responsibility towards the Rio Grande, emphasizing the need for firsthand experiences to instill a commitment to its conservation. The event not only served as a platform for environmental stewardship but also as an opportunity for residents to explore and appreciate the natural wonders of their region.

Buoyed by the success of the clean-up event, Baca expressed aspirations of reintroducing river rafting races to the Rio Grande in the future, further promoting community engagement and appreciation for the river’s ecological significance.
