The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) is conducting an investigation into a police shooting incident that occurred around 9 p.m. on Thursday near Central and Mesilla in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
According to APD reports, an officer approached a suspect on the sidewalk in the area, during which drugs allegedly fell out of the suspect’s pocket. Subsequently, the suspect fled on foot, prompting the officer to pursue.
Suspect Allegedly Points Gun
APD Chief of Police Harold Medina stated that during the pursuit, the suspect allegedly ignored verbal commands to drop a gun. The situation escalated when the officer discharged their firearm, reporting to dispatch that the suspect had pointed a firearm at them.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the shooting, and the suspect was successfully apprehended. However, at the time of the arrest, no gun was found on the suspect’s person.
Ongoing Investigation
Despite the suspect’s apprehension, police are continuing their investigation into the incident. Authorities are actively searching the area for the weapon believed to be involved in the altercation.
The circumstances surrounding the event, including the presence of drugs and the alleged possession of a firearm by the suspect, highlight the complexities and challenges faced by law enforcement officers in ensuring public safety.
