COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — Police have arrested Tomeka Nicole Henry, the owner of Touch By An Angel Learning Academy, a private school in Lake City, on allegations of embezzling $1.3 million from state funding meant for the institution.
Search Warrants Executed
On Thursday, officers from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with counterparts from the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office, executed search warrants at Touch By An Angel Learning Academy and a residence on NW Canton Lane in Lake City. These actions were part of an ongoing investigation initiated after receiving a tip in December 2023.
Charges and Allegations
Tomeka Nicole Henry faces charges of fraud and grand theft. The investigation suggests that the misappropriated funds were intended for the school’s operations, sourced from two state-funded programs: the Early Learning Coalition and the Step Up for Students program.
Continued Investigation
Authorities are probing the possibility of accomplices or additional victims whose personal information might have been exploited in the fraudulent activities. Henry’s bond has been set at $1 million, with $500,000 assigned to each charge.

The upsetting thing about this case is the over 1 million dollars of money fraudulently obtained was for our local families and children in need of services.
