A 19-year-old man from Indianapolis has been apprehended and charged in connection with a shooting and carjacking incident that occurred on the east side of Indianapolis, as well as a separate carjacking incident that took place nearby just days earlier.
Details of the Incident
The incident unfolded when officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) East District responded to a report of a shooting in the 8100 block of E. 36th Street just after midnight on Wednesday. According to reports, a woman employed by a ride-sharing service had picked up two passengers and was driving them to 35th Street when they attempted to rob her.
Surveillance footage captured the chilling events as the armed assailants attempted to take control of the vehicle. The woman, in a desperate bid to defend herself, used her own firearm, but she was ultimately shot in the arm and leg during the struggle. Despite her injuries, she managed to flee the scene and seek assistance.
The suspects, after firing two shots, fled the scene in the stolen SUV, along with the victim’s firearm. However, thanks to swift action by IMPD officers, the stolen vehicle was located and the suspect, identified as 19-year-old Bryant Hoskins, was apprehended just five hours after the initial shooting incident.
Charges Faced by the Suspect
Bryant Hoskins is facing several preliminary charges in connection with the incident, including:
- Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
- Armed robbery
- Possession of a machine gun
- Theft of a firearm
During a subsequent search of Hoskins’ residence, law enforcement officers reportedly discovered evidence linking him to another carjacking incident that occurred just five days earlier at a gas station on Franklin Road and 38th Street. Additionally, police recovered the victim’s stolen firearm, as well as a second handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device, allegedly belonging to the suspect.
Law Enforcement Response and Community Safety
IMPD Officer Amanda Hibschman highlighted the importance of teamwork and communication in swiftly connecting Hoskins to the violent crimes and facilitating his apprehension. She emphasized that such collaborative efforts are crucial in ensuring the safety of the community and holding individuals accountable for their actions.
While authorities continue their investigation, they have not yet identified the second suspect involved in the initial carjacking and shooting incident. However, the arrest of Hoskins serves as a clear message that law enforcement remains committed to pursuing and apprehending individuals who engage in criminal activities.
Conclusion: Upholding Public Safety
The swift response and apprehension of the suspect in the Indianapolis shooting and carjacking incident underscore the dedication of law enforcement agencies to maintain public safety and hold perpetrators of violent crimes accountable. The cooperation between law enforcement officers and the community is instrumental in ensuring that individuals like Bryant Hoskins are brought to justice swiftly.
