JACKSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WJW) – A Jackson Township homeowner and two cats were rescued after a house fire in Stark County on Tuesday. 

According to the Jackson Township Fire Department’s Facebook page, firefighters responded to a home on Harbor Drive just after 4:45 a.m. where they found heavy smoke and flames coming out of the windows and garage.

According to the department, firefighters extinguished the bulk of the fire and entered the home, where they began a search and rescue for the two cats. 

“One of our guys was able to locate a cat hiding within a couch on the first floor, but had to chase and catch it upstairs while the other cat was retrieved from a bathroom,” Battalion Chief Seth Rieger said.

According to the department, both of the cats were unharmed and safely reunited with the homeowner outside.

“We’re fortunate that a neighbor to the rear along Salerno St. had called 911, and we also want to credit the Jackson Police officers with having saved the homeowner since they arrived quickly to awaken and evacuate him to safety,” Fire Chief Tim Berczik said.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
