Austin police have made public the body camera footage capturing an officer-involved shooting incident in southwest Austin, shedding light on the events that unfolded.
Incident Details
On April 6, around 2 a.m., authorities responded to a disturbance call at an apartment complex located at 3050 Tamarron Blvd, known as the Cliffs at Barton Creek. Upon arrival, officers encountered a situation where they believed there was a physical altercation occurring inside one of the apartments.
Officer Response
Two officers approached the front door of the apartment and identified themselves. Meanwhile, Officer Gabriel Walker Prado, positioned in the patio area, observed two individuals within the apartment, one of whom was armed with a gun. Officer Prado immediately alerted his colleagues about the firearm and subsequently discharged his weapon at the armed individual, later identified as 31-year-old Avelino Medel II.
Outcome and Investigation
Medel sustained non-life-threatening injuries from the gunshot and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported among the individuals involved in the incident. As of now, no charges have been filed, and the case remains under investigation.
Officer Status
Officer Gabriel Walker Prado, the officer who discharged his weapon, has been placed on standard administrative leave pending further investigation.
