San Diego’s Birch Aquarium, located at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, has marked a significant milestone as it concludes its first penguin hatch season since the arrival of the birds in 2022.

This year, the aquarium proudly announced the hatching of five Little Blue Penguin chicks during the months of January and February, as reported on its official website.

A Delightful Addition to the Colony

Kayla Strate, Assistant Curator of Birds at Birch Aquarium, expressed excitement over the successful hatching, stating, It’s so exciting to introduce these juveniles to the colony as they are curious and adventurous and a delight to watch explore their new home through diving and socializing. This accomplishment also marks the aquarium’s inaugural contribution to an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) avian breeding program.

Historic Firsts

The arrival of the new penguin chicks brought forth a series of firsts for Birch Aquarium. New Year’s Day marked the first-ever hatching of a chick at the facility. Subsequently, on Jan. 23 and Jan. 26, two more chicks joined the colony, followed by the final two hatchings on Feb. 18 and Feb. 20. Notably, while four of the chicks are confirmed male, the sex of the youngest one is still pending confirmation, according to aquarium officials.

Nurturing and Development

During the initial months following their hatching, the chicks underwent crucial developmental stages, learning essential skills such as feeding, socializing, and swimming. Around the three-month mark, they transitioned to join the rest of the colony at the aquarium’s Penguin Care and Conservation Center, Beyster Family Little Blue Penguins.

Individual Identification

To facilitate individual identification, each of the five chicks has been fitted with colorful wing bands. These bands serve as unique markers, distinguishing the penguins by combinations such as white/white, blue/green, black/black, orange/yellow, and yellow/brown, as outlined by Birch Aquarium.
