Residents of Wolford Road in Licking County, Ohio, find themselves trapped following a bridge collapse caused by heavy rain-induced flooding.
The collapse of the temporary bridge, providing access to Wolford Road, occurred Tuesday night as Rocky Fork Creek overflowed due to heavy rainfall, prompting the closure of the road. No vehicles are permitted to cross the bridge until further notice.
Residents Voice Concerns
Shawn Browning, a resident of Wolford Road, expressed concerns about safety and accessibility, stating, The water was so high and over the bridge that we had to park down the road. Now I have to park across the street and walk across the broken bridge to get home.
Kirk Vanguelpen, another resident, highlighted the inconvenience caused by the collapsed bridge, mentioning, You park on one side and walk a mile up to the house. The bridge is falling in more and more every day.
Efforts to Restore Accessibility
The Licking County Engineer’s Office has been collaborating with private landowners to stabilize the area, laying down 100 tons of gravel to allow emergency vehicles passage.

As families adjust to the situation, concerns about essential services such as trash collection and mail delivery arise. Tina Holzapfe, a resident, emphasized the challenges faced by those unable to leave the neighborhood, including difficulties in accessing groceries and essential supplies.

Despite the challenges, residents of Wolford Road are rallying together to support one another. Holzapfe noted, All of the neighbors have been pulling together to help one another.

The temporary bridge served as a vital connection during the construction of a new bridge. The closure of the original bridge was necessary due to structural and safety issues, prompting its replacement.
As Licking County residents await the receding waters and repairs to the bridge, community solidarity remains strong amidst the challenges posed by the recent collapse.
