Nearly seven months following a life-altering car crash, Caleb Dulin from High Point, North Carolina, reflects on his journey to recovery and gratitude for being back home.
A Test of Faith and Support
Caleb, the son of long-time High Point Officer David Dulin, faced a challenging recovery process after sustaining a brain injury in the accident. Despite the hardships, Caleb expressed gratitude for two crucial elements that helped them persevere: their unwavering faith and the outpouring of support from their community.
A Grateful Heart
Reflecting on the ordeal, Caleb shared his appreciation for the support received during his three-month hospitalization, where he battled against significant physical setbacks, including a collapsed lung and a brain bleed. The family was overwhelmed by the love and encouragement shown through cards, messages, and donations.
The Road to Recovery
For Caleb, the journey to recovery was akin to starting life anew. After emerging from a coma-like state, he had to relearn basic functions like blinking and swallowing. Despite the challenges, he found moments of joy in small victories, such as receiving medical clearance to indulge in his favorite foods.
Community Support
The support extended beyond the hospital walls, with Caleb’s classmates at Wheatmore High School organizing a pep rally to uplift his spirits during his rehabilitation. Additionally, his family played a crucial role in his recovery, cherishing moments spent together and envisioning a brighter future.
Adjusting to a New Normal
Back at home, Caleb’s routine has shifted, focusing on activities that align with his current capabilities. While he may not partake in high-energy pursuits like skiing and motorcycle rides, he has found solace in simpler pleasures like board games and quality time with loved ones.
Setting Goals
Despite the setbacks, Caleb remains determined to regain his strength and mobility. Regular physical therapy sessions and visits to the YMCA are steps towards his ultimate goal of returning to his passions, including skiing and participating in his shooting team.
Looking Ahead
As Caleb continues his journey of recovery, his family remains hopeful for the future. They envision celebrating their collective resilience with a summer vacation and eagerly anticipate Caleb’s return to Wheatmore High School in the fall. Beyond that, Caleb aspires to pursue a career as a helicopter pilot for hospitals, embodying the spirit of perseverance and determination.
In the face of adversity, Caleb’s story serves as a testament to the power of faith, community, and resilience in overcoming life’s challenges.
