LOS ANGELES – A man was apprehended in the Hacienda Heights area this week for allegedly pilfering limbs from cherry blossom trees, which has been an ongoing issue at Schabarum Regional Park.
Persistent Problem
The suspect’s arrest comes after a series of incidents where branches from cherry blossom trees in Schabarum Regional Park were illicitly removed. These trees, a centerpiece of the park’s allure, attract numerous visitors each spring for their picturesque blossoms.
Detective Alexander Harvey from the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department emphasized the detrimental impact of such acts, stating, This type of crime really damages the community. You want to come out and see a beautiful park instead of trees dying.
Costly Consequences
Over the years, park authorities have observed a pattern of missing branches, with some trees suffering extensive damage that may lead to their demise. Estimates suggest that the unauthorized removal of branches could result in expenses exceeding $50,000 for taxpayers.
Kevin Kane, a Master Arborist with LA County, highlighted the extensive recovery process required, stating, It will take structural rehabilitative pruning, probably 5 or 6 years, for these trees to come back.
Investigation and Arrest
Prompted by the substantial financial and environmental impact, authorities initiated an investigation. This led them to the Flower District in downtown Los Angeles, where they discovered branches resembling those from Schabarum Park being sold.
LASD Detective Bao Dang recounted, They were just selling them downtown for anywhere from $20 to $40. Subsequent surveillance efforts resulted in the apprehension of the suspect while he was in the act of unlawfully cutting cherry tree branches.
Detective Harvey described the arrest, stating, When I contacted him, he threw down the cutting instrument. He knew what he did and has been doing. He was cooperative.
Ongoing Concerns
While one arrest has been made, authorities suspect that additional individuals may be involved in similar activities. They urge anyone with information to contact (626) 854-5560.
Conclusion: Preserving Community Assets
The arrest of the alleged cherry blossom thief underscores the importance of safeguarding communal spaces and natural treasures. Such incidents not only incur financial costs but also diminish the beauty and vitality of public parks. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to preserve these cherished environments for future generations.
