Chicago – A Chicago attorney, Michael Abramson, is facing additional charges in his federal tax fraud case, including witness tampering and contempt of court. The charges come after Abramson’s initial indictment in 2018 on federal tax charges.
Allegations and Background
The allegations against Abramson involve filing false individual and corporate income tax returns. The original indictment accused him of providing over $1 million for personal expenses to a woman he was romantically involved with, mischaracterizing the funds on corporate books and tax returns.
Witness Tampering Accusations
The new indictment not only renews the previous tax charges but also adds accusations of witness tampering. It is alleged that Abramson attempted to influence the testimony of a witness, who had been employed by his companies for several years. He purportedly provided her with a copy of her previous court testimony annotated with handwritten notes altering her answers.
Trial Postponement and Legal Proceedings
Originally scheduled to commence on Feb. 5, Abramson’s trial has been postponed to July 1, 2024, following the alleged witness tampering incident. As a result, his bond has been revoked, and he will remain in federal custody pending his trial.
Arraignment Details
Abramson, aged 74, residing in Wilmette, is set to be arraigned on the new indictment on March 28.
