A tragic incident unfolded on Interstate 55 in Cook County, Illinois, as Octavio Lara Chavez, a 40-year-old Chicago resident, faced the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol. The aftermath of his actions resulted in one fatality and left another individual injured.

On Sunday, Illinois State Police received reports of a fatal pedestrian crash on I-55 southbound at Cicero Avenue. The scene was grim, with a Hyundai Sonata parked on the right shoulder, where three pedestrians were attempting to change a passenger-side tire.
Suddenly, a Dodge pickup truck, allegedly driven by Lara Chavez, swerved off the roadway and onto the right shoulder, colliding with the Hyundai and two of the pedestrians. The impact was devastating, claiming the life of 28-year-old Nikolas Hutto, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Another pedestrian sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, while the third individual escaped unharmed.

He has been charged with one felony count of aggravated driving under the influence involving death and aggravated driving under the influence causing great bodily harm.
