A community of mothers in Chicago, grappling with the loss of their children to violence, is finding solace and support as Mother’s Day approaches. On Friday, approximately 150 women gathered at St. Sabina Church in Auburn Gresham for an event focused on self-care and healing.
For the past decade, the organization Purpose Over Pain has organized this event each spring, offering a space for strength and solidarity during what can be an emotionally challenging time. Many of the attendees are facing their first Mother’s Day without their sons or daughters, a profound loss that only those who have experienced it can truly comprehend.
The Pain of Loss
Pam Bosley, co-founder of Purpose Over Pain, expressed the enduring impact of such tragedies: Our life will never be the same, this is our new norm, but we have to learn how to walk in this pain. Melissa Vazquez, another attendee, shared her struggle, reflecting on the difficulty of facing each day knowing a part of her is gone.
Encouraging Self-Care
To promote self-care and rejuvenation, the event offered various pampering activities such as manicures, massages, and hairstyling, providing a brief respite from the weight of their grief. Bosley, who tragically lost her son Terrell in 2006, emphasized the importance of support and community: You’re not alone, and don’t try to do this by yourself. The goal is to transform your pain into a purpose.
Turning Pain into Purpose
Despite the irreparable loss they have endured, these mothers are finding strength in solidarity. Annette Johnson, who lost her son Kewon Vilella in 2016, underscored the significance of connecting with others who share their pain: It’s hard, but it’s important because it gives you the opportunity to share and be with other mothers that are experiencing the same hurt and pain.
Looking Ahead
As Father’s Day approaches, Purpose Over Pain plans to extend similar support to local fathers who have suffered the loss of a child to violence. A comparable event is scheduled for June 8th at St. Sabina Church, providing fathers with a space for healing and connection. Additional details will be accessible online.
Conclusion: Finding Strength in Solidarity
In the face of unimaginable loss, the mothers of Chicago impacted by violence are coming together to support one another and find solace ahead of Mother’s Day. Through Purpose Over Pain’s annual event, these women are reminded that they are not alone in their grief. As they navigate the complexities of their new reality, they are discovering the transformative power of community and the resilience of the human spirit.
