In a concerning turn of events, an 18-year-old named Christopher Fantastic has been arrested in connection with a second attack, mirroring a previous incident in Gilbert. Mesa police disclosed the arrest on Wednesday, revealing that the assault occurred on May 29, 2023, leading to Fantastic being booked on an aggravated assault charge. The incident involved a large group of 30 to 40 kids and young adults in a park near Val Vista Drive and Pueblo Avenue.

Disturbing Details of the Assault

Reports indicate that officers responding to the scene witnessed individuals dispersing, and those who remained were reticent about the altercation. It wasn’t until January 4 that a report was filed, when a man reported that his stepson had been the victim of the assault. A short video clip, under 10 seconds long, captured the brutality of the attack, showing a group of teenagers around a boy on the ground, with one teen repeatedly hitting him while another stomped on the victim.

Multiple Arrests and a Disturbing Pattern

Fantastic’s recent arrest follows his involvement in an August 18 attack at the Gilbert In-N-Out Burger, where he was apprehended along with Aris Arredondo, 18, and two juveniles. Notably, police found one suspect wearing the victim’s stolen shoes months after the attack. These arrests contribute to a larger pattern of violence in the southeast Valley, with eight arrests involving seven individuals related to teen violence.

Unraveling the “Gilbert Goons” Connection

A previous investigation by The Arizona Republic exposed the “Gilbert Goons,” a group primarily comprising affluent teenagers responsible for a series of attacks in the southeast Valley over more than a year. The gang has been linked to the fatal beating of a 16-year-old, Preston Lord, at a Halloween party in Queen Creek. One arrested Goon admitted to being associated with the group, disclosing that the moniker originated in a Snapchat group chat.

Law Enforcement Challenges

Gilbert Police Chief Michael Soelberg acknowledged the difficulty in connecting the attacks initially, as victims did not explicitly mention the gang. However, recent revelations indicate that victims have since referred to their assailants as members of the Goons. Gilbert police have initiated multiple investigations, labeling them as “teen violence” cases, with nine active cases and four reopened investigations.

Conclusion: Addressing the Alarming Rise in Teen Violence

The series of arrests and investigations underscore a concerning rise in teen violence, particularly orchestrated by groups like the “Gilbert Goons.” Authorities face the challenge of not only apprehending individuals involved but also dismantling the networks that contribute to such incidents. The community, parents, and law enforcement must collaborate to address the root causes and work towards creating a safer environment for the younger generation.
