Selma, Calif. – The tight-knit community of Selma is rallying around the Sesate family after a harrowing incident during a high school baseball game. On April 16th, Chris Sesate suffered a heart attack while watching his son play in Selma High’s JV baseball game against Reedley High.
Quick Response Saves a Life
Lalo Tovar, a fellow Selma JV Baseball father and a seasoned cardiovascular technician, sprang into action along with others, including an off-duty Fresno firefighter. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Tovar initiated CPR, swiftly realizing that Sesate was not breathing. After administering CPR, Sesate received a shock from a defibrillator. He was then transported to Adventist Hospital in Reedley and later to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, where he underwent open heart surgery.
Community Unity
In a display of solidarity, the Selma High Baseball Dugout Booster Club and the Selma High Softball Diamond Club organized a fundraiser to support the Sesate family during this challenging time. Natalie Castro, Treasurer of the Selma High Baseball Dugout Booster Club, emphasized the community’s ethos of mutual support, stating, We all help each other. We stick together.
Generous Contributions
Dozens of community members gathered outside Pelican’s Snoballs in Selma, where the shop generously donated 20% of its proceeds to the Sesate family. A large card was also placed at the venue for well-wishers to pen messages of encouragement and support.
A Heartfelt Reunion
Tovar, reflecting on the incident and the subsequent outpouring of support, expressed his gratitude for Sesate’s recovery, stating, I’ve known him since we were kids. I’m glad he’s still with us.
